Jump out of the 'Box'

May 2019

My story was beginning from a box, and I was stacked with the box for a long time. Thanks for the whole class helped me ‘‘come out’’ the box.

The First Turning point — without a box

The below picture shows the whole process how I jumped out of the box. I used a 3d surface to cut off the box, then I found that it would be nicer without a box.

After that, I spent a lot of time on the curves of the surface. And I also tried many different thickness/numbers of each layer.

The Second Turning Point — Twisting

When the first 1/4 scale mockup was made by laser cutting, it was inadvertently found that the entire model could be rotated around the side axis. With the feedback from the class, I decided to make the whole model into a rotating state, which not only ensures stability, but also ensures the overall dynamic beauty.

After locking the twisting way, I made a new mockup.

However, there was the biggest problem: how to connect each layer. I tried many different methods, such as clear lucite, resin and wood blocks. After communicating with the teacher, in order to achieve the best aesthetic and structural strength, in the final plan I decided to connect all the layers with two rows of wood blocks.
