Concept Video

The first part tells the story of a person and his team, at the beginning he was ignored by his team, and finally, he found himself is an irreplaceable member of the team. The second part explains our concept and installation. You can create a world by your hands, and each world is unique, just like us, everyone is irreplaceable.

 

Brainstorming

Our theme is Nature, which consists of a tremendous amount of single elements. These elements often behave in groups when they act together. This phenomenon can be observed in every corner of the world.

Concept Development

An individual can not achieve what a group can achieve, but a group can not achieve what individuals can achieve. Our inspiration came from ants, they build their kingdom together in order to survive. Human beings work together as well, but nowadays their main reason to do this is to achieve personal wealth.

We found that piling up sand is an efficient way to encourage children, adolescents and young people to build an object according to their imagination.

3D Model

People can built mountains by gathering sands. Also you can dig holes to build lakes. All these images are projected by a camera, through Kinect detects the depth between sands and itself.

Technical Support

Kinect can detect the depth between sands and itself. Different colours stand for different depth. When the depth of sands is lower than horizontal level, water will appear.

Depth map uses gray scale images to show the depth of the space, but we wanted to substitute colorful bits for gray bits, like green, dark, blue and yellow etc. According to the a series of brightness ranges of the pixels in the depth map, we defined a function named Changecolor, using custom colors to fill the pixels in the screen.

Prototyping

The box was decorated by four types of beans, red beans, mung beans, black rice and millet respecively.

 
 
 

Final Solutions

We aimed to imitate the earth's mantle by using different beans with different color, users can create different shape of sands by hands or tools.

Real-time detection

We use Kinect for depth detection. By measuring the distance between the sand and the sensor, we can set the ocean, land and mountain areas.

Because this project belong to a short design workshop, when we all focus on the final installation, at the same time, I was in charged of all the video stuff. The biggest challenge for me was the time management, only 8 hours left for me to finish …

Exhibition

Though a four-day Wuxi International Industrial Exhibition, this installation successfully attracted hundreds of people to participate in, including children and professional staff.

We built an installation to provide a sand box being full of smooth, soft and colorless sand. It is a perfect carrier to stimulate audiences to touch them. Then they can not help gathering sand for mountain or digging them for holes.Kinect will utilise the embedded infrared rays sensor to detect relative heigh of sand hills. These data are transferred to Processing program in order to change color projected directly to sands by projector.
